[Electronic Version] Computer Science Graduate Student Newletter No. 1994-10 September 1, 1994 ===================================================== COSC Welcomes 2 New Lecturers The department welcomes two new lecturers this semester. Dr. Robert Lea, a Senior Software Engineer at LinCom, will be teaching COSC 6303 (Numerical Analysis). Dr. Lea received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of Houston in 1972. He has over 30 years of engineering experience at NASA Johnson Space Center. Dr. Douglas Moore will be teaching COSC 3340 (Automata) this semester. Dr. Moore is currently a Computer Science Research Scientist at Rice University. His research interests include Geometric Modeling, Computational Geometry, Parallel Algorithms and Data Structures, and Graph Algorithms. Dr. Moore received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Cornell University in 1992. The two part-time lecturers will share an office (513-PGH) in the department. ===================================================== New Equipment Access Fee Set at $50 Students registering for Computer Science courses will find a new fee added to their fee bill. The new "COSC Equipment Access Fee" goes into effect recently. The income generated from this fee will be used exclusively for the purchase and maintenance of equipment used by students as well as for teaching. For 1994-95, the fee is $50 per semester for students taking 3 or more credit hours of COSC courses. Students, COSC-majors or otherwise, have to pay the fee for taking COSC courses. "It will provide us with a predictable income of about $60K per year," said J. C. Huang in a recent faculty meeting. All COSC students will be able to have a computer account on COSC's Unix cluster. E-Mail stations, complete with printers, will be set up later for easy access to e-mail. Account applications for undergraduate COSC majors will be accepted shortly. In the past, the department charged a $20 "Lab Fee" on most of the programming courses (e. g. 1410, 2410, 3410, 3480, and 4370). These fees will no longer be charged. The university charges a separate "Computer Use Fee" which is $50 per semester for those taking 9+ credit hours. Computer use fee is collected by the University Computer Center for the computer facilities campus-wide. ===================================================== COSC Committee Assignment Elections were held in a recent faculty meeting for positions on various department committees. Many students helped in setting up the lab in 376-PGH. The software installed includes Turbo C++, Microsoft Office (DB, Spreadsheet, Word, etc.). Nineteen new X-terminals were installed in 385-PGH recently. They are open to all students in the College. In addition, our Digital Logic Lab has been moved temporarily from 210-PGH to 533-PGH (inside the COSC Library).
