Newsletter [Electronic Version] Number 1995-04, April 7, 1995 ====================================================================== COSC Computing Facility News For the past ten years or so, the departmental computer systems have been managed by COSC graduate students. These part-time system administrators normally don't stay on the job for a long period of time. Even though the system administrators had performed very well in the past, it is not an ideal way to run a system with 80 workstations from multiple vendors. The department now has enough resources to hire a permanent full-time system administrator. An advertisement was placed in Houston Chronicle recently for a department system administrator. According to Dr. J. C. Huang, COSC Chairman, there are about 30 applicants for the job so far. If you know of any qualified individual, please recommend him/her to the department. The department has ordered 20 new SUN SparcStation 5. These computers will be placed in service in the next few weeks. In addition, the College has decided to fund several "computer aided classrooms." One of them will be in the PGH building. After the disappearance of several mice, a Next Workstation was stolen from the Department Library on the fifth floor. If this trend continues, the department may have to restrict the operating hours of the facility during weekends. Please report any suspicious activity to the department or campus police. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prof. Hofri Moved to Rice Dr. Micha Hofri, who has been visiting the department for the last few years, left for Rice University where he is part of the theory group in the Computer Science Department. Dr. Hofri can be reached at "hofri@cs.rice.edu". ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Graduate Student Resume Book Graduate students are encouraged to submit a copy of their resume to the Office of Graduate Studies to be included in the Graduate Student Resume Book (GSRB). This resume book may be utilized by the department and potential employers. The resume is limited to one page in length. This serves as a starting point for potential employers. A more detailed resume may be submitted when contacted by the employer. The resume book will be placed in the office for employers' use. A resume will stay in the book for at most one year. Students should update their resume once a semester. Students should also inform the office if they are no longer seeking employment. A guideline on how to prepare the one-page resume is available from Mrs. Amanda Vaughan. In the short amount of time of its existence, we have already received several requests from local companies including Compaq. "We have more employers requesting resumes than we have resumes," said Dr. Stephen Huang. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Department WWW Server Student home page on WWW can now be linked to the department home page. Graduate students can send the URL of their WWW page together with their name (Last Name, First Name) to Dr. S. Huang via e-mail. Students should consult recent e-mails from the System Administrator on creating the page. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- TA Selection and Evaluation Underway The Department Scholarship Committee met recently to evaluate current TAs and to recommend new TAs to the Chairman. Dr. J. C. Huang will appoint new TAs around April 15. TA application form should be filled out carefully and completely. Incomplete applications will not be considered. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Graduate Student Publication Miss Xiaofen Huang's paper entitled "Applying Imprecise Computation Algorithms to Real-Time Image and Video Transmission," co-authored with her thesis advisor Dr. Albert Cheng, has been accepted by the 1995 IEEE-CS Real-Time Technology and Applications Symposium (RTAS) to be held in Chicago, IL, May 1995.
