Dr. Leiss Elected Graduate Advisor

The faculty elected Professor Ernst Leiss as the new Director of Graduate Studies for the next two years. He will replace Dr. Stephen Huang who has served at the position for four years. The transition will take place January 1, 1997.

Dr. Leiss has previously served as both the Graduate Advisor and the Undergraduate Advisor for several years. He also served on numerous campus positions including the President of the Faculty Senate.


Dr. King to Lead IEEE Edu. Activities

Dr. Willis K. King has been appointed Vice President for Educational Activities of the IEEE Computer Society for the year 1997. The Computer Society is the largest professional society in the world for computer scientists and engineers with a membership of 100,000.

The Educational Activities Board (EAB), which Dr. King will chair, has been responsible for the development of model curricula for computer science and engineering, for the sponsorship of computer science and engineering accreditation activities and, for continuing education programs for high school teachers. It also sponsors national conferences and makes teaching excellence awards among other activities.

As a vice president, Dr. King will also serve on the Executive Committee of the Computer Society Board of Governors.


Graduate Students to Form Association

A group of graduate students is organizing an association of Computer Science graduate students. Mr. Woody Jin, a COSC Ph. D. Student, made a presentation to the Computer Science Faculty about the purpose of the informal organization.

According to Jin, the main purpose of the association is to improve the communication among graduate students and between the students and the faculty, and to help new graduate students to adjust to academic life at UH.

Dr. Lennart Johnsson appointed Professors Sivakumar, Pitsianis, and Paris to assist Woody Jin. Woody can be reached at wjin@cs.uh.edu.


Graduate Student Publication

Chun Wong's paper entitled "Maintaining High Transmitted Image Quality in Congested ATM Networks,'' co-authored with his thesis advisor Professor Albert Cheng, had been accepted for publication and presentation at the Workshop on Resource Allocation Problems in Multimedia Systems, held in conjunction with the 17th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium, Washington, D.C., Dec. 1996.
