Plan 2 MS Adopted

Plan 2 Master of Science in Computer Science degree was formally adopted early August. To avoid confusion, we will use "Thesis Option" to refer to our original MS program and "Plan 2" to refer to the newly adopted program. The rules and regulations governing the Plan 2 program are available on the department web site ( http://www.cs.uh.edu/Graduate/ms2.html).

Plan 2 Q & A

Q: I was admitted last year. Am I eligible for Plan 2?
A: No. With the overcrowding of Computer Science courses right now, there is no way we can handle the additional course demand. Only students admitted in Fall 2000 or later are eligible.

Q: Why is the admission standard different?
A: We have a well-recognized MS program. One of the main concerns of the faculty is the quality of the program. The requirements for Plan 2 are lower in some aspects (such as Math courses), so the admission requirement is set at a higher level to ensure that we produce the same high quality graduates.

Q: How do I prove my professional work experience?
A: Typically a letter from your company's human resources department (with name, position title, employment date, and job description) will do.

Q: I am a Chemist (Biologist/Accountant), but I use computers in my job. Does this qualify me as a Computer Professional?
A: No.

Q: How about a part-time research assistantship during my study at UH?
A: No.

Q: Can my work experience during my study at UH count as professional experience?
A: No. The work experience must be before the admission.

Q: Can I change between Thesis Option and Plan 2?
A: Students in the Thesis Option Masters program are not allowed to switch to Plan 2 after the initial election. Students in Plan 2 may change to Thesis Option by petition.

Q: Is there any disadvantage to be in Plan 2?
A: Yes. Students in the Plan 2 Masters program are generally not eligible for financial aid (TA, RA). Plan 2 students may not qualify for the Ph. D. program at UH and other universities. Plan 2 is a terminal degree. You will also miss the opportunity to work with a professor.
