Visual Database Migration Builder

Abstract

As information exchange becomes more and more important in today’s business environment, new technology is needed to facilitate cross-database communication through the Internet.  In this thesis, a Visual Database Migration Builder (VDMB) was designed for data exchanging among various distributed heterogeneous databases based on the data mapping rules specified by individual users in XML configuration files. VDMB is an online system using Multi-tier architecture with JSP interacted with JavaScript for GUI layer and business logic wrapped as EJBs on WebLogic Application Server.

VDMB is a very portable system because of the separation of the system implementation from specifications guiding data migration process. It also provides various visual tools for users to browse database information and dynamically generate complicated SQL queries. Oracle 8i, Microsoft SQL Server and MYSQL were chosen as testing databases while Apache Xerces parser was used for XML data parsing based on DOM and SAX.
