Design and Implementation of a Natural
Attenuation Decision Support System

Abstract

Groundwater remediation through natural attenuation at petroleum fuel release sites has proved to be effective and protective of human health and the ecosystem in recent years. A decision management system that provides both data management and a modeling function is a valuable tool for the application of natural attenuation at a polluted site associated with fuel hydrocarbons. This thesis developed a computer software, BIOSITE, which can be used in the remedial investigation to predict future transport of contaminants of concern over time to determine if natural attenuation should be implemented at a polluted site.

The BIOSITE system is designed as a three-tier application to improve software reusability, flexibility and scalability.  Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 is used as the development platform to allow utilization of its diverse set of programming tools, such as MFC, ATL and OLE DB compatibility. COM technology is used for the interoperation of multiple software components. Object-oriented design is applied and OLE DB consumer templates are used to optimize data access through COM components on a variety of database management systems.
