A FRAMEWORK FOR THE

REMOTE CONTROL OF DEVICES VIA THE WEB

Abstract

A framework for the remote control of devices via the web was developed. The framework provides users with the means to control a device remotely through the Internet; collect and display real time data from the device; and watch the consequences of the adjustments they make through live video broadcast; all on the same web page. Windows Media Technology is used to broadcast live video and audio. Data Display Panel and Device Control Panel in the user interface communicate with the server through sockets. Data and commands passing between the user interface and server are in XML format.

In addition, a software tool was developed to help the system designer in rendering user interfaces automatically from specifications in XML. With this tool, a designer can save much time and effort because programming a user interface can be very time consuming.
