Type and Specialty Classification of Search Engines
An Implementation of Information Retrieval System
Based On Category Concept Hierarchy

Abstract

Because of the world wide web, information retrieval (IR) systems are now used by millions of untrained users as well as experts all over the world. The search engines that perform IR tasks, often retrieve thousands of potentially interesting documents to a query.

To find out which is the best search engine that meets users’ specific requirement, this paper introduces a method to classify type and specialty of certain search engines that is based on vector space model of Information Retrieval and a category concept. The approach uses cosine formula for calculating the similarity between a query and a retrieved document as of vector space model. Using a java program developed for this thesis, several experiments have been done and the results have been analyzed.

Conclusion is user can improve search results by picking appropriate general purpose or specific purpose search engines detected by method introduced in this paper.
