HTML to XML and XML to HTML: A Conversion Tool

Abstract

The World Wide Web (WWW) has been developed for several years. SGML, HTML and XML are major markup languages for Web documents. SGML is too complicated to be widely used. Since HTML is simple and inherited from SGML, HTML has been proven the most popular Web technology for past few years. The current Web technologies gave the Web more functionality. HTML’s drawback show when it is required to give more powerful support for dynamic resources. XML is the new generation of markup languages. Being simple, extensible and dynamic, XML is especially good for database and dynamic Web sites development. The current Web browser support for XML is still weak. The conversion tool is developed to address this problem. It is designed and implemented in the Windows environments. Following the software engineering approach, the conversion tool is designed using function specifications and analysis and implemented using VB. Besides being simple and easy to use, it is also functional and reusable. Our conversion tool was developed using the most recent technologies such as DOM and XSL. The tool provides two function modules to convert an HTML file to an XML file and an XML file to an HTML file in order to give Web developers more choice and more convenience.
