Visualization for Reservoir Characterization

Abstract

ABSTRACT Visualization is becoming more and more important in modern life. In the oil industry, visualization has been applied to aid the reservoir characterization process. The reservoir characterization process uses geostatistical techniques to capture information from all available engineering and geoscience data, and visualization techniques let us study this information in a three-dimensional (3D) manner. Geostatistics is an integrating technology based on geological concepts and mathematical theories. It is used to analyze location-dependent data and then build a two-dimensional, three-dimensional, or four-dimensional model based on the data and its interpretation. Since its introduction into the oil industry, it has been used to enable different disciplines such as geophysicists, geologists and engineers to work together to achieve the common goal of modeling the reservoir. By applying modern visualization techniques and geostatistical techniques together, this thesis project created a fully functioning 3D reservoir characterization software package, called GridstatPro, which can check reservoir information and produce cross sections and create realistic 3D models quickly. The design and implementation method for the package is described in this thesis. The package was developed under both Unix and Windows environments. C++ and OpenInventorTM were used to develop it on Unix workstations while C++ and OpenGL were used to develop it on PC Windows platforms. A user's guide for the package is also included in this thesis.
