- A research paper "Online Motion Capture Marker Labeling for Multiple Interacting Articulated Targets" by Dr. Deng and his graduate students at the UH Computer Graphics and Interactive Media Lab (http://graphics.cs.uh.edu) was recently accepted into the prestigious Eurographics Annual Conference as the full paper (oral presentation), which will be held at Prague, Czech Republic at September 2007. This paper proposes a practical solution to one of important issues in current motion capture practice - how to automatically label interacting multi-subject motion capture. This is the first graphics research paper published by the UH Computer Graphics and Interactive Media Lab since it was founded in October 2006.

Excellence Award for Innovation with Instructional Technology. This is one of
the highest honors bestowed by the University of Houston.
"Anywhere Anytime'' coursework developed by Dr. Subhlok and his colleagues.
- Ken Kennedy, Professor of Rice University and long-time Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at University of Houston, passed away February 7, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. He was 61 years old.
Houston and Texas has lost one of its great intellectual leaders in the field of high performance computing. His contributions to our department are many, including a number of joint projects in advanced network infrastructure for the city and state, and research projects in grid computing. His advice, interaction, and influence will be greatly missed.
- Dr. Kakadiaris was interviewed onKTRK andLocal 2 News about the Face recognition developed at theComputational Biomedicine Lab.
- Professor Pavlidis and the Computational Physiology Lab (CPL) were
awarded from the Department of Defense new research contracts totaling
~1.7 million dollars as of January 2007. Under this funding the lab will
perform further research on the psychophysiology of stress with emphasis
on its facial manifestations. This basic research will be complemented
with computational modeling of the phenomena as well as engineering
their application to next generation polygraphy.
- The UH team of computer science students advised by Professor Albert Cheng
beat last year's winner (University of
Pittsburgh) while placing fifth overall in the grueling CiberMouse Cyber
Robotic Competition at the 27th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium held in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil.

This will follow the previous two workshops that we had in collaboration with the College of Technology in April 2005 and March 2006 -http://www.cs.uh.edu/conferences.shtml
The motivation stays the same: provide an efficient forum in computational science that allows us to promote collaboration in this highly interdisciplinary research and expose our graduate students to this broad area.
A tutorial with hands-on practice will complete the workshop and be organized by Edgar Gabriel -http://www.cs.uh.edu/~gabriel/
We will have eight invited speakers who are leaders in their respective fields. Invited speakers are:
- Dr. David Keyes, Columbia University
- Dr. Michael Resch, University of Stuttgart, Germany
- Dr. John Boisseau, University of Texas
- Dr. David Anderson, University of California, Berkeley
- Dr. Mary Wheeler, University of Texas at Austin
- Dr. Michel Bercovier, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
- Dr. Roland Glowinski, University of Houston
- Dr. Charles A. Taylor, Stanford University
- The department has recently opened its newest computer lab/seminar room thanks to a grant from Sun Microsystems. The lab re-explores thin-client architecture using Sun Ray 2 clients tied to a pair of quad-core Opteron servers. Maximizing the use of available lab space, the Sun Ray lab combines a Windows lab and a Unix lab, using thin clients and servers to provide either Solaris or Windows to students as their needs require. In the future, we plan to expand this concept to other operating systems by adding servers for Linux and possibly MacOS. Expanding on the multi-use approach, the lab doubles as a department seminar room, with a projector and sound system for presentations. more
