The department has recently opened its newest computer
lab/seminar room thanks to a grant from Sun Microsystems. The lab
re-explores
thin-client architecture using Sun Ray 2 clients tied to a pair of
quad-core Opteron servers. Maximizing the use of available lab
space, the Sun Ray lab combines a Windows lab and a Unix lab, using
thin clients and servers to provide either Solaris or Windows to
students as their needs require. In the future, we plan to expand this concept to other operating systems
by adding servers for Linux and possibly MacOS.
Expanding on the multi-use approach, the lab doubles as a department
seminar
room, with a projector and sound system for presentations.
