06.19.07 - Computer Science Receives Award to Recruit Doctoral Students

UH's Department of Computer Science received an award from the US Department of Education (ED) to address the shortage of U.S. doctoral students in science and engineering. This 3-year $383,643 award will provide fellowships to assist graduate students with excellent records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue Ph.D. degree in Computer Science.

Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program was established by ED to attract students of superior ability and achievement into high-quality graduate programs and provide students with the financial support necessary to complete advanced degree. According to Dr. Stephen Huang, the PI of this project, GAANN fellows will receive a stipend of up to $30,000 per year plus full tuition and benefits, and some funding to support research activities such as travel to conferences. The fellowship is renewable for up to two additional years, contingent on satisfactory progress in course work and research. With the required cost-sharing from UH, the funds available to assist graduate students will total $620,643.
