NSF Awarded a REU Grant to Computer Science Department
The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a REU Site grant to the Computer Science Department of the University of Houston recently. The REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students during the summer for the next three years. In addition to the $310,001 provided by the NSF, the University also committed $126,000 to the project bringing the budget total to $436,001. This is the second REU awarded to the group of computer science professors consists of Drs. Huang, Leiss, Kakadiaris, Pavlidis, and Verma.
During the last three summers, 31 undergraduate students from all over the US (including 7 from UH) participated in the 10-week summer program. "We are very excited to receive the second REU award. It is a confirmation that our effort in the past three years has been viewed positively by the NSF and the Computer Science community,"said Dr. Stephen Huang, the PI of the Project.
This summer's program will be between June 2nd and August 8th. Participants will receive a $4,000 stipend and other subsistence such as room and board and travel during the 10 weeks. Students interested in the REU program should contact Professor Huang of the Department of Computer Science. Specific topics will be available on the web later. Undergraduate student participants in the REU program must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
