2008-2009 Scholarship Program Guidelines
The Computer Science Department (CS) and the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) aim to encourage students to pursue studies in the sciences and mathematics at the university through this scholarship program. The following scholarships are available for the 2008-2009 academic year.


The CS Scholarships(CS)
Scholarships for one academic year.
Entering freshmen and continuing undergraduates


The CS Scholarship Committee, which is comprised of CS faculty representatives administers CS scholarships. The CS Scholarship Committee reviews all applications and informs students of the results.

Eligibility

Incoming Freshmen
An applicant must be a graduating high school senior with a state core GPA of 3.0 or higher, and must meet all other admission requirements for the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The recipient must enroll in, and complete, a minimum course load of twelve semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) as a major in Computer Science, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester 2008, and enroll in and complete a minimum course load of twelve semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) in the spring 2009 semester.

Continuing Undergraduates
An applicant must be an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Houston, must major in Computer Science, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in all CS and in all mathematics courses taken at UH, and must have twenty-four or more semester credit hours remaining in the degree program at the time of the scholarship award. The recipient must enroll in, and complete, a minimum course load of twelve semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) in end of the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters.

Graduate Students
An applicant must be a graduate student in good standing at the University of Houston, must major in Computer Science must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher over all in major courses taken at UH, and must have eighteen or more semester credit hours remaining in the degree program at the time of the scholarship award. The recipient must enroll in, and complete, a minimum course load of nine semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) in the end of fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters.

CS scholarships are open to all eligible individuals. There are no restrictions to applicants based on sex, race, age, nationality, religion, disability, or country of origin.

Scholarship Fund Disbursements
Made in two equal increments (fall ’08 and spring ’09) directly into the recipients’ student account upon verification of enrollment, major, and minimum qualification requirements.

Selection Criteria
The scholarship committee shall consider scholarship, leadership, civic and community involvement in making the selection. Scholarship form is the most important component of an application, and the committee shall determine the relative weight given to other criteria.

Eligibility for Other Scholarships and Financial Aid
Recipients of these scholarships may apply for (and accept) other scholarships, grants, or awards for which the recipients are eligible.

Application Deadline
Applications must be received by 5 p.m on
Friday, March 28, 2008.   The department will accept scholarship applications for the 2008-2009 academic year beginning January 1, 2008. The scholarship committee meets regularly, to consider completed applications on a continuing basis.   You are encouraged to apply as early as possible, as scholarship awards are contingent on the availability of funds.  

How to Apply
You complete only one application form to be considered for CS scholarships for which you are eligible.

Your application package must include the current year’s scholarship application form and an official or certified copy of your transcript (high school transcript for incoming freshmen; UH transcript for continuing students).


Scholarship Application Forms

Notification of Scholarship Award
Scholarship recipients will be notified when a scholarship is awarded by late May or early June 2008.

Forfeiture
Failure of the recipient to register for classes (at least twelve semester credit hours for undergraduates and nine semester credit hours for graduate students) by the published UH late registration deadline will constitute an automatic forfeiture of the scholarship.

There are numerous sources of financial assistance for qualified students.
