COSC7397 Advanced Topics: Distributed Computing

Course Overview:
The main goal of this course is to make graduate students
familiar with selected current research in distributed computing
systems, develop presentation and critical skills, and execute a
significant systems project. The course is open to
Ph.D. and Master students with some background in computer systems.
The
course will consist of presenting and critiquing research papers in the
selected areas and a project related to the relevant topics. This
semester we will focus on the following content areas:
- Wide area distributed computing - Volunteer computing systems
like BOINC, Cycle sharing systems like Condor, Large scale
Distributed Storage like Google filesystem, etc.
- Network modeling, evaluation, simulation, PlanetLab worldwide
networking testbed.
- Virtualization - Presenting a logical view of complex
computational and communication resources
- Large scale fault tolerance, Fault tolerant MPI
Course format:
The course would consist of paper critique and presentation, peer
feedback,
final project and optionally a final oral exam. Papers will be mainly
selected
from highly-rated networking and distributed computing conferences in
the past
few years, e.g., HPDC, Supercomputing, SIGCOMM, MOBICOM, INFOCOM,
PODC.
Tentative wight for various components of the course is: Presentations
(25) , Paper Critiques (15) Class Participation (10) and
Project (50)
The students have a lot of freedom in selecting projects.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of Computer Systems and Networks and computer
programming skills are
essential. Graduate courses in Operating Systems, Computer Networks,
and Parallel
Computing would be helpful but are not required. We encourage you to
consult with one of the instructors to determine if the course is
right for you.
