Scholarships
There are several scholarship opportunities available to computer science students at the university, college and department level. We encourage our computer science students to apply for every scholarship opportunity available. The Department of Computer Science and the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) aim to encourage students to pursue studies in the sciences and mathematics at the university through our scholarship program. The following scholarships are available for the 2009-2010 academic year. All computer science scholarships are given for one academic year (fall and spring semesters) to entering freshman and continuing undergraduates. The Computer Science Scholarship Committee, which is comprised of computer science faculty representatives, administers the computer science scholarships. The Computer Science Scholarship Committee reviews all applications and informs students of the results. An applicant must be a graduating high school senior with a state core GPA of 3.0 or higher and must meet all other admission requirements for the University of Houston and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Scholarship recipients must enroll in and complete a minimum course load of twelve semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) as a computer science major, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the academic year. An applicant must be an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Houston, a computer science major, must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in all COSC courses and UH courses completed at UH, and must have 24 or more semester credit hours remaining in the degree program at the time of the scholarship award. The recipient must enroll in and complete a minimum course load of 12 semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) by the end of the fall and spring semesters of the award year. An applicant must be a graduate student in good standing at the University of Houston, a computer science major with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher in all computer science courses completed at UH, and must have 18 or more semester credit hours remaining in the degree program at the time of the scholarship award. The recipient must enroll in, and complete, a minimum course load of nine semester credit hours (full-time equivalent) by the end of the fall and spring semesters of the award year. Computer science scholarships are open to all eligible individuals. There are no restrictions to applicants based on sex, race, age, nationality, religion, disability, or country of origin. Disbursements will be made in two equal increments (fall 2009 and spring 2010) directly into the recipient’s student account upon verification of enrollment, major, and minimum qualification requirements. The scholarship committee considers scholarship, leadership and civic and community involvement in making the selection. The scholarship form is the most important component of an application, and the committee shall determine the relative weight given to other criteria. Recipients of these scholarships may apply for (and accept) other scholarships, grants, or awards for which the recipients are eligible. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009. The department will accept scholarship applications for the 2008-2009 academic year beginning January 1, 2008. The scholarship committee meets regularly, to consider completed applications on a continuing basis. You are encouraged to apply as early as possible, as scholarship awards are contingent on the availability of funds. Complete only one application form to be considered for computer science scholarships for which you are eligible. Your application package must include the current year’s scholarship application form and an official or certified copy of your transcript (high school transcript for incoming freshmen; UH transcript for continuing students), resume and one letter of recommendation.
